Feeding the Squirrels

Today we went for a walk. There were a ton of squirrels! They were everywhere, in the trees, on the ground, and a couple just stood there staring at us until we got close. Then they ran up a tree. Some people gave us some unshelled peanuts to feed to the squirrels. I left two of my nuts on the post of a fence so the squirrels could come and get, and tossed the other three to some squirrels, who quickly grabbed them and bounded away to enjoy their meal. We also saw a couple of herons. They were big!

After a while, we came across a little tunnel that supported train tracks that were going right overtop of us. After we came out of the tunnel, Ava fell off her scooter and started crying. Mom said is was time to start heading back.

While we were going back, we went off the path toward the creek. There were a couple dozen small fish. Me, Elle, and Thea threw rocks in the water, trying to raise the most dust. Then Dad started skimming rocks. We joined in, and started searching everywhere for a good flat rock. Dad showed me how to skim it. I actually skimmed a few rocks! It was cool.

Then we had to leave the creek and head back to the car. There was a park there, so the kids played a bit. Mom said there was a boat launch a bit further down, so I went with her to check it out. On the way there, we saw that someone had scattered a bunch of seeds on the ground, and there were pigeons and squirrels there, having lunch. We heard a pecking, looked up, and saw a woodpecker! It was pretty cool to see his head go back and forth, pecking holes into the tree.

We stayed very still, and squirrels started coming toward. One of them came a centimeter away from my foot, sniffed it, and quickly backed off. There must've been a nut shell beside my foot. One got really close to Mom's foot as well.

After a while, we kept walking until we got to the boat launch. A bunch of guys were fishing. There were hundreds of little fish swimming around. Pretty soon, the others joined us. There was a dog in the water splashing around, barking all the time. It was a pretty funny sight! Then it was time to go home. Next time, we should bring our own unshelled peanuts!
