The Phanerozoic eon has three eras, the Paleozoic era, the Mesozoic era, and the Cenozoic era. The Paleozoic era has six periods, the Cambrian period, the Ordovician period, the Silurian period, the Devonian period, the Carboniferous period, and the Permian period.
The first period in the Paleozoic era, the Cambrian period, lasted from 542 million years ago to 488 million years ago, lasting for a total of 54 million years. The invertebrates Hallucigenia (ha-lucy-JEAN-ee-a) and Opabinia (OH-pa-BIN-ee-a) lived during this period.
