The ocean
The ocean is full of thousands of different animals, including squid, shark, whale, and fish. The water in oceans is salt water. The waters in the ocean can be very shallow or they can go down for miles.
Gills let water-dwelling animals breathe. As water passes over their gills, they extract oxygen from the water. Humans cannot breathe underwater because we do not have gills to extract oxygen from the water. We have to bring an air tank if we want to make long dives.
The ocean has many underwater volcanoes. When these volcanoes erupt, the lava piles up on it until it pokes out of the water, forming an island.
Water pressure is the weight of all the water on top of you. The deeper you go, the stronger the water pressure gets. Water pressure can get as heavy as a bus.
Waves can be small or very large. Waves are formed by wind. Waves can get as high as the Statue of Liberty! It is said that a wave destroyed the legendary city of Atlantis.
The ocean can be a dangerous place for humans to explore. We may have scuba diving gear, submarines, and submersibles, but at certain depths, the water pressure could crush a submersible like a can. But even if it is dangerous, the ocean is still awesome.
