Saint Patrick
In Saint Patrick's time, it was difficult for the church to preach to Ireland. Saint Patrick is credited for converting Ireland to christianity, and is the patron saint of Ireland.
Patrick was born in 389 A.D. to Calpurnius, a deacon and municipal official. From the start, Patrick didn't pray very often. In 403 A.D., he was kidnapped by Irish slave traders. He spent six years as a slave in Ireland. Saint Patrick wrote that he would say over 100 prayers during the day, and just as many at night.
In 409 A.D., Patrick heard a voice in his sleep, telling him to be ready to go home. Patrick traveled 200 miles away from his master's home, and there he found a ship. When he asked for passage, the sailors refused. Patrick offered a silent prayer, and the sailors let him on the ship.
The journey was very long and difficult. Patrick was finally united with his friends and family in 411 A.D., at the age of 22. Patrick studied to become priest. While he was doing this, Pope Celestine sent the first of many missionaries to Ireland. The missionaries failed and/or were killed because of misunderstandings. The missionaries had been untrained, and didn't know anything about the peoples' languages.
In 432 A.D., Saint Germanus consecrated Patrick as bishop. Patrick had a dream in which the Irish people begged him to come back and walk among them. Patrick traveled to Ireland and, over thirty years, converted its people.
Saint Patrick's feast day is March 17.
