What causes lightning?

Lightning is caused when atoms rub against each other in clouds. This makes electricity, and when it has built up, it is released in a bolt of lightning.

What causes thunder?

Thunder is caused when a bolt of lightning is released. The lightning strikes the air very quickly, and since the lightning is very hot, it makes a loud bang.
