The Battle of Britain

The Battle of Britain, lasting from July 10 to October 31, 1940, was during World War 2. It was a war between the British and the German air forces. Hitler (the leader of Nazi Germany) was attempting to force Britain into surrender with a series of bombing raids. The British RAF (Royal Air Force) and the German Luftwaffe fought in the skies over south-east England.

Famous planes from the RAF include the Spitfire and the Hurricane. The Spitfire was small and fast, reaching incredible speeds. It had room for only one person, the pilot. The Hurricane was larger and could not go as fast the Spitfire, but it could take many enemy bullets and still stay in the air.

On October 31, Hitler finally gave up the air raids on Britain. The RAF had won.
