Gladiators and the Colosseum
The Colosseum was a large amphitheatre built in ancient Rome. Construction on the Colosseum lasted from 72 AD to 80 AD. An amphitheatre was like a huge circus.
Different types of entertainment took place in the Colosseum, but the peoples' favourite was gladiator fights. Gladiators were prisoners or slaves who fought each other to entertain the people. There were different types of gladiators. The people decided whether the loser should live or die. If they put their thumbs up, the gladiator would live to fight another day. Thumbs down meant death.
Gladiators also had to fight wild animals. Under the Colosseum was a series of tunnels through which gladiators and wild animals were brought into the Colosseum. Trapdoors let them into the arena. Sometimes, the Colosseum was even flooded so that the gladiators could take part in sea battles.
The Colosseum is in ruins today, but it is still a magnificent building.
