Sharks

Sharks are fish. There are many different species of shark, including the great white, hammerhead, and tiger shark. Sharks are carnivores (meat eaters). Sharks have incredible senses. They can smell one drop of blood in a million drops of water.

The great white shark has about 4 rows of teeth. Whenever a tooth falls out, it is replaced by another tooth from the row behind it.

A shark’s diet is mostly seals. When a shark attacks a seal, its eyes roll back in their sockets to protect them from any attack the seal might make. A tiger shark will eat anything it can get hold of. A cookiecutter shark bites pieces of flesh off whales and other animals leaving behind a cookie-shaped hole in the animal’s skin.

Sharks are constantly threatened by overfishing, and in some countries, shark meat and shark fin soup has become a delicacy. The first sharks appeared in the water 400 million years ago, long before the dinosaurs.
