The Titanic's life

The Titanic's construction lasted from March 1909 to May 1911. The Titanic was launched at 12:14pm on May 31,1911. It took 62 seconds (1 minute and 2 seconds) for the Titanic to slide into the water.

The Titanic began its maiden voyage on April 10,1912. 4 days later, on the night of April 14,1912, as the Titanic was steaming over the North Atlantic, it picked up a series of massages warning the ship of ice. Captain Smith thought his ship was in no danger.

At about 11:40pm, Frederick Fleet, one of the six lookouts on board the Titanic, spotted an iceberg. Quickly, he hit the warning bell. Robert Hichens was at the wheel at the time of collision. First Officer Murdoch ordered him to turn the wheel hard to starboard (right), but it was too late. The Titanic struck the iceberg on the starboard (right) side of its hull, making large holes across 76 metres (250 feet) of hull.

25 minutes after the collision, Captain Smith gave the order to abandon ship. Flares were launched when the ship's bow was half underwater. The Titanic slowly sank, as lifeboats slid down its sides.

A few hours later, the Titanic's stern was high up in the night sky. A few seconds later, the lights went out, and the ship cracked, separating the bow from the stern. The bow broke away from the stern completely, plummeting towards the seabed. The stern started sinking a few minutes after the bow, and soon the Titanic could not be seen.

In 1985, the search ship Knorr and the uncrewed submersible Argo began to search for the Titanic shipwreck. Just after midnight on September 1,1985, the team found the wreckage of a boiler, which was instantly recognizable as one of the Titanic's. After following a trail of metal, the dark shadow of the ship's hull came into view. 73 years after its loss, the Titanic had been found.
